Janete Silva is one of the most sought after performers/choreographers/instructors in the country and internationally. She is an expert in Brazilian dance including Samba, Orixá dance, Maculelê, Capoeira, Silvestre technique, Silva technique as well as Modern, Contemporary, and Ballet. Janete is Salvador in Bahia, Brazil – an Afro-Brazilian city known for its strong cultural traditions.
Because of her drive and natural talent she was invited to join Bale Folclórico da Bahia, the first professional AfroBrazilian folkloric dance company – at age 19. In order to pursue her passion, she had to babysit her siblings so she took them to dance classes every day. After becoming the principal dancer, she was invited to perform many acclaimed companies including DanceBrazil, Orquestra Popular da Bahia, Freddiek Bratcher and Company, Brazil Skindo Company, and Vivir Brazil Dance Company. She danced in Ivete Sangalo and Kiesza’s music videos. In 2012, Janete cofounded the Silva Dance Company (a fusion of Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian dance, and Contemporary dance), with her husband and partner Leandro Da Silva. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lowell Folk Festival, National Black Arts Festival, the NYC Brazilian Independence Day Celebration, Target’s Super Sabado! at El Museo del Barrio, and the Houston Brazilian Festival. She is faculty Steps on Broadway, Ailey Extension, Mark Morris Dance center.
